Global Affairs Canada has restated its opposition to the use of cluster bombs in the wake of U.S. President Joe Biden’s recent decision to provide Ukraine with a multi-million dollar aid package, which includes the munitions.

“Canada’s commitment to eliminating the effects of these weapons on civilians – particularly children – is unwavering,” stated spokesperson John Babcock.

He noted that Canada is a signatory to the Convention on Cluster Munitions and has been a driving force behind its adoption, which now counts more than 100 countries amongst its ratifiers.

“We take our obligation under the CCM seriously and continue working towards universal acceptance of this important initiative,” added Mr. Babcock. Unfortuently, neither Ukraine or Russia nor the United States have signed onto this agreement.
