NDP Won’t Support Back-to-Work Legislation to End BC Port Strike : Jagmeet Singh

On July 4, Jagmeet Singh clarified the NDP would not be providing assistance to the Trudeau government in passing legislation to end a strike of port workers in British Columbia.

He declared that his party stands for negotiated contracts and the right to strike, calling on both sides to work together to reach a settlement.

Reports point to job losses due to automation as one of the centrepieces of talks that have been regarded as stagnant by both the employers’ association and union.

The median salary earned by longshore workers apparently reached $136K in 2020. Instead of backing legislation, then, Mr. Singh implored both parties to negotiate until an agreement has been established.
