In a recent appearance on the popular podcast The Diary of a CEO, Canadian Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre shared strong views on socialism, government power, and global security issues.

Speaking with host Steven Bartlett, Poilievre argued that supporters of socialism hold what he described as a contradictory understanding of human nature. He suggested that socialists tend to view individuals in the private sector as self-interested and greedy, while believing those working within government institutions act with altruism and integrity.

According to Poilievre, this belief can lead to expanding government control, with decision-making concentrated in the hands of a few. He warned that such centralization risks exposing “the worst vices in human nature,” ultimately threatening individual freedoms. Instead, he advocated for a decentralized, “bottom-up” approach to governance, where power is distributed and the role of government is limited to functions individuals cannot perform themselves.

Addressing concerns about inequality under capitalism, Poilievre acknowledged that some critics argue the system has widened wealth gaps. However, he countered by claiming that many countries now operate under what he termed “socialism for the very rich.” He pointed to housing regulations as an example, arguing that excessive restrictions limit supply, increase property values for existing homeowners, and make homeownership increasingly unattainable for younger and working-class populations.

Despite his criticism of government expansion, Poilievre clarified that he does support a foundational social safety net. He emphasized the importance of ensuring access to essential services such as healthcare and education for those in need. However, he cautioned that government spending beyond these core responsibilities often yields diminishing returns and can eventually become counterproductive.

The discussion also touched on international issues. Poilievre identified China as a potential major threat to Canada and global stability, citing concerns about espionage, foreign interference, and the possibility of military aggression, particularly regarding Taiwan. While acknowledging China’s historical and cultural significance, he warned that the current political leadership could steer the country in a more confrontational direction.

On Iran, Poilievre took a firm stance, describing its government as a leading sponsor of terrorism. He expressed concern over its nuclear ambitions and argued that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons is essential for maintaining global peace.

The wide-ranging conversation highlighted Poilievre’s political philosophy, combining a focus on limited government, economic freedom, and strong positions on international security.
