The cosmetics business in Japan dates back to the Middle Ages in 1615. Then the Edo period began in Japan with the samurai shogun Tokugawa Yaesu. During his reign, a Chinese physician came to this country as an advisor to Tokugawa during the reign of the Ming dynasty in China. His efforts popularized the use of cosmetics. A company called Yanagiya Honten manufactures cosmetics. That institution still exists.

After that, one by one many cosmetics manufacturing companies were established in Japan according to the huge demand, such as Kanebo, Hanao, Ryon, Kurabu, Shiseido, Koose, etc.

Nakayama Taichi, the founder of Kurabu Cosmetics, is considered one of the pioneers. She not only created cosmetics, but also founded clubs, cafes and published the first fashion magazine in 1924, Josei or Mahila, to modernize women. The four-color cover easily grabs the eye even when looking at old photos.

Nakayama was passionately patriotic. He also has a special contribution in the management of the state. To advance contemplative thought, he founded a publishing house named Puratonsha. From this institution the collection of lectures of Kabiguru Rabindranath was published in 1924. More than 20 lectures have been translated from English and Bengali into Japanese. The name is Inishie no Michi or the old way.

Rabindranath Tagore and Nakayama Taichi were polar opposites. Rabindranath is a landlord and Nakayama is an industrialist. But both were pioneers in the advancement of human society and contemplative activities. This is where they met.

Today Nakayama Taichi’s efforts are history, so is Rabindranath’s Visva Bharati. Visva Bharati is today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both institutions continue to prioritize youthful beauty–herein lies the unity of the East.
