The Prime Minister’s Office has announced that the federal by-election for the St. Paul riding of Toronto, Ontario will be held on June 24. The by-election is to fill the seat vacated by longtime Liberal Minister of State Caroline Bennett.

Bennett announced his resignation as an MP after 26 years in the House of Commons last December. Out of these 26 years, he served as full minister for 10 years. He has since been announced as Canada’s ambassador to Denmark.

Toronto-St. Paul is considered a trend-setting riding. The candidate of the government party is the winner here. But it has become a safe riding for the Liberals since Bennett was first elected.

Longtime Liberal staffer Leslie Church has been announced as the candidate for the seat to succeed Bennett. The Conservative Party has announced the name of Don Stewart, a financial professional. Amrit Parhar, director of a non-profit organization, will contest the election for the NDP.
