Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair has announced that the Canadian Armed Forces are working to integrate artificial intelligence (AI). However, he assured that the technology will not replace humans.

Blair made these remarks at a conference in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Canada is one of the 61 countries that have signed a new document on the responsible use of AI for military purposes. Blair stated that, in accordance with the strategy announced earlier this year, Canada is working to make the Canadian Armed Forces AI-capable by 2030. The key is to ensure that we can use the technology proficiently and ethically.

A document detailing a speech at a conference on responsible artificial intelligence (AI) in the military domain has surfaced. It highlights the potential of AI to enhance the capabilities of our armed forces personnel but emphasizes that this technology is not intended to replace human decision-making. The speaker, Blair, stressed the importance of ensuring humans remain at the forefront of critical decision-making processes and that robust accountability measures are in place.

The strategy paper underscores the need for collaboration with allies to not only develop AI technology effectively but also to integrate and manage it successfully. It notes that Canada’s allies are making significant strides in AI adoption and that Canada must accelerate its efforts to keep pace. The document also alludes to the growing accessibility of AI technology for malicious purposes.
