Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has claimed herself to be the most qualified to fight against former U.S. President Donald Trump on behalf of Canada. On Friday, she joined the Liberal leadership race and stated that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre would sell Canada out to Trump. She made this remark in an advertisement posted on social media.
In the advertisement, she reminded Canadians that she led the negotiations with Trump over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). She also mentioned that she does not like him much because Canada won that battle.
At the same time, she stated that she left Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet in December because she knows how to win the next fight against Trump.
On Friday, Freeland confirmed on social media that she is entering the Liberal Party leadership race to succeed Trudeau. She plans to officially launch her campaign in Toronto on Sunday.
Former central bank governor Mark Carney launched his campaign in Edmonton on Thursday. Liberal House Leader Karina Gould is also set to start her campaign this week. Ottawa MP Chandra Arya and former Montreal MP Frank Baylis have both hinted at entering the leadership race. Cape Breton MP Jaime Battiste has also suggested he may run.
