The story of a terrifying psychological thriller
“The world is beautiful and worth fighting for,” – the underlying sadness of this famous quote by Ernest Hemingway seems to be spread throughout every frame of the movie “Seven”. Directed by David Fincher, this movie is a dark story that teaches us to think anew about the sin and moral tension of humanity.
The story of the movie revolves around two detectives, William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and David Mills (Brad Pitt). One experienced and wise, the other young and emotional – these two polar opposite characters are involved in solving the murder mystery of a terrible serial killer. The murders are designed to symbolize the famous Seven Deadly Sins, which leads the story to deep philosophical thoughts.
David Fincher’s excellent direction has taken this movie to unique heights. From the dreary darkness of the rainy city to the terrifying crime scene, every scene feels like a deathly sense of fear and confusion. Darius Khanji’s cinematography and Howard Shore’s music further complicate the psychological tension of the movie.
Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt play their characters brilliantly. Freeman’s calm yet deep characterization and Pitt’s emotional Mills character touch the audience’s emotions. Kevin Spacey, in the John Doe character, turns the whole story around with his cold yet trembling presence. Especially, the last scene of the movie and the question “What’s in the box?” will remain a symbol of mystery for a lifetime.
“Seven” is not just a thriller, it is a philosophical analysis of morality, sin and revenge. It is a movie that will make you think, be afraid and finally immerse you in a strange emptiness. This is a must-see movie for those who like dark psychological thriller movies.
Happy watching.
