Despite heavy rain on Friday, hundreds of Montreal families gathered at Pavillon Henri-Bourassa for the 23rd edition of Welcome Hall Mission’s annual Back to School event, aptly titled “Going Back with Your Head Held High.” The initiative provided thousands of students with brand-new school bags and essential supplies, helping ease the financial burden many families face as the new academic year approaches.

This year, the organization distributed around 2,000 backpacks filled with the latest school materials. According to Welcome Hall Mission CEO Sam Watts, the supplies were carefully selected after consultations with local schools to ensure students received exactly what they need.

“All of the equipment inside is brand new it’s the latest stuff,” Watts said. “And it’s also what we know students actually need. If someone is experiencing poverty or homelessness, they don’t deserve our second best they deserve our best.”

The event comes at a critical time, as rising costs of housing, food, and transportation continue to put pressure on families across Montreal.

“One of the things we’re seeing in today’s reality is that everything costs more,” Watts explained. “These are the areas families struggle with the most, and school supplies can cost hundreds of dollars for just one child.”

In addition to the giveaway, local organizations hosted information sessions at the venue, offering guidance and resources to help students and families stay on track throughout the school year.

For many newcomers, the event was especially meaningful. “I’m here for my siblings,” said Temitope Abijo. “We haven’t been in Canada for long, and this will be their first time attending school here. This support is very important.”

Parents also expressed gratitude for the initiative. “This is a very good thing,” said Rakebul Bhuiyn. “So many people need this kind of help, and it’s truly appreciated.”

Watts noted that the program is entirely funded by donations from Montrealers, amounting to what he estimates are hundreds of thousands of dollars. He emphasized that beyond school readiness, the broader mission remains ensuring every Montrealer has a safe place to call home.

Adding to the excitement, children were given the opportunity to choose their own backpacks. “The kids love being able to make a choice,” Watts said. “It helps them feel proud and confident going back to school.”

Welcome Hall Mission’s next Back to School event is scheduled to take place in Saint-Henri on August 13, continuing its commitment to supporting Montreal families during challenging times.
