
For decades, there was an unspoken promise to young people work hard in school, earn your degree, and you’ll find a stable, fulfilling career. For today’s graduates, that promise is starting to feel like a lie.
Take Jacqueline Silver, for instance a recent computer science graduate from McGill University who assumed her degree would open doors to a thriving tech career. Instead, she spent over a year applying to hundreds of jobs, battling rejection after rejection, before finally landing one in her field. Her story isn’t unique it’s becoming the norm.
“I was really exhausted, and it was also just really discouraging,” Silver said, describing her daily grind of studying by day and job-hunting by night. It felt, she said, like she was enrolled in an extra course one with no syllabus and no end in sight.
It’s ironic that a computer science graduate in one of the world’s fastest-growing and most in-demand fields had such a hard time finding work. But the reality is that the very technology these students are trained to understand is also the one making their jobs disappear.
According to new research from Stanford University, early-career workers in AI-exposed occupations such as software development, sales, marketing, and customer service are seeing employment opportunities decline. Meanwhile, older, more experienced workers remain largely unaffected.
Hamoon Ekhtiari, CEO of FutureFit AI, says this shift is part of a broader, more complex transformation. “AI will create a bunch of jobs and opportunities and it’ll impact a bunch of other jobs,” he explains. But for young graduates like Silver, that nuance doesn’t make the job hunt any less brutal.
Generative AI tools like ChatGPT can already write and debug code with surprising efficiency work that once kept entry-level software engineers employed. “Maybe you still need someone to tweak it or look at it closely,” Silver says, “but overall, you don’t really need that many people to write it anymore.”
This raises an uncomfortable question: how do young professionals gain experience if AI automates the very tasks that used to be their training ground?
Catherine Connelly, a human resources professor at McMaster University, warns that automation risks cutting off that first crucial rung on the career ladder. “There is a danger that some people are going to not have that opportunity to come in at an entry-level position, where they’re doing those routine tasks that nobody else wants to do,” she says.
Meanwhile, Canada’s youth unemployment rate has soared to 14.7 percent the highest in 15 years outside of the pandemic. Politicians are calling it a “crisis,” but few seem to have real solutions. Conservatives blame the government for lacking a strategy, while Liberals insist they’re “acting with urgency” to ensure no worker gets left behind.
But for many young Canadians, that reassurance rings hollow. The world of work is changing faster than schools and governments can adapt. The old promise four years of study for a lifetime of security is gone.
What’s needed now is a complete rethink of how we prepare people for the workforce. Companies must stop treating young workers as disposable and start investing in their growth. Schools need to teach adaptability and creativity skills that machines can’t easily replicate. And governments must create real pathways for retraining and transitioning workers in an AI-driven economy.
AI isn’t inherently the enemy. Like any powerful tool, it depends on how we use it. But unless we act now to bridge the widening gap between education and employment, we risk losing an entire generation of talent not because they lack skills, but because the system failed to evolve with the times.
The future of work isn’t written yet. But if we keep clinging to the old promises, young people like Jacqueline Silver will keep discovering, far too late, that those promises were never built for the world they now live in.
