
By now, most Ontarians have heard the buzz: Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is about to break ground on Canada’s first small modular reactor (SMR) in Bowmanville, just east of the Darlington nuclear station. Touted as a clean energy milestone, this $7.7 billion project (the first of four reactors costing a combined $20.9 billion) isn’t just another infrastructure development—it’s a bet on the future of electricity in Ontario.
And frankly, it’s a bet we need to make.
With the province’s energy demand projected to soar by 75 percent by 2050—driven by electrification of transport, population growth, and industrial expansion—Ontario has a critical decision to make: either aggressively build capacity now, or face a future of rolling blackouts, higher electricity costs, and a throttled economy. According to Energy Minister Stephen Lecce, this is “the equivalent of adding four-and-a-half times the city of Toronto to the grid.” That’s not an exaggeration—it’s a wake-up call.
So, why SMRs? These compact reactors promise to be safer, cheaper, and faster to build than traditional nuclear plants. The BWRX-300 model, developed by GE Hitachi, is Ontario’s pick—and when fully realized, the four units will generate enough power for 1.2 million homes. That’s not just numbers—it’s real energy security for real people.
Critics will undoubtedly raise concerns: the cost, the waste, the usual nuclear skepticism. And while these are valid discussions to have, let’s put things into perspective. OPG isn’t asking taxpayers to foot the bill directly; the project will be funded through a mix of cash reserves and debt, with long-term cost recovery through electricity rates. That’s a far cry from reckless public spending.
Moreover, 80 percent of the construction dollars will stay right here in Ontario, creating 18,000 jobs and supporting 3,700 long-term positions over the reactor’s 65-year lifespan. That’s economic development baked into clean energy policy—a rare win-win.
Yes, there are environmental and safety questions to be asked, and transparency from OPG and government regulators must be unwavering. But if Canada wants to hit net-zero targets and avoid an energy crisis, it has to embrace nuclear as a core part of the solution. Wind and solar are crucial, but they’re not always reliable. Gas is cleaner than coal, but it’s still a fossil fuel. Nuclear, done right, offers stable baseload power with zero emissions.
Ontario’s SMR project is bold. It’s expensive. It’s high-stakes.
But it’s also the kind of vision we need to secure our energy future.
