Through the Social Services Relief Fund, the Ontario government is contributing more than $8.3 million to the construction of 57 supportive housing units in Ottawa.
Along with Lisa MacLeod, MPP for Nepean, Stéphane Sarrazin, MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, and Goldie Ghamari, MPP for Carleton, the funding was announced by Nina Tangri, Associate Minister of Housing.
“Our administration’s Social Administrations Help Asset is giving prompt lodging and vagrancy alleviation in Ottawa and networks across Ontario,” said Nina Tangri, Partner Priest of Lodging. ” As we work to ensure the safety and housing of our most vulnerable, it is essential to support novel solutions like these new Ottawa housing units.
Shepherds of Good Hope, a community and supportive housing organization, is converting a private residential service home at 1095 Merivale Road into a single-occupancy unit. Individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless will receive longer-term housing-based solutions through the project.
Schools, parks, grocery stores, pharmacies, and employment opportunities will all be close to residents.
This announcement is part of the province’s Social Services Relief Fund, which helped municipal service managers and Indigenous program administrators create longer-term housing solutions and assist vulnerable people in Ontario, including those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, with over $1.2 billion of support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Indigenous Supportive Housing Program and the Homelessness Prevention Program receive an additional $202 million from the Ontario government each year, bringing the province’s annual investment to close to $700 million.
