This agreement is the result of a resolution that was approved by the General Council of the Teslin Tlingit Council. In response to the opioid crisis in the Teslin Tlingit community in January 2022, the General Council declared a state of emergency. In part, the resolution said that more monitoring and tools were needed to make public safety better and protect the vulnerable people in Teslin Tlingit Council.

The agreement gives the Teslin community another way to deal with the Substance Use Health Emergency. The community will have access to additional resources to enhance public safety, provide assistance to citizens in need, and investigate complaints of specific illegal activities on Teslin Tlingit properties and Teslin Tlingit Council Settlement Lands through the implementation of the Safer Communities and Neighborhoods Act.

Together with the SCAN Unit, Teslin Tlingit Council will collaborate with community- and citizen-centered health-related programs and services.

The agreement acknowledges the significance of cooperating in order to improve public safety and safeguard the Teslin Tlingit community’s most vulnerable members.
