Athletes who ascend to the podium or have their names engraved on trophies sacrifice countless hours in honing their bodies, often in ways that the average person can’t fathom. Day in and day out, they dedicate themselves to rigorous training, pushing their physical limits in gyms, on fields, and in pools. Their lives are governed by strict diets and sleep schedules.

Once a common misconception, it’s now widely understood that physical prowess alone isn’t enough to reach the pinnacle of athletic achievement. As Muhammad Ali famously stated, ‘Champions aren’t made in the gym. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision.’

This exemplifies the critical balance between the body and mind. The mind, with its unwavering belief, dedication, and mental toughness, is what propels athletes to greatness and enables them to bounce back from setbacks. It’s no wonder that high-performance athletes and their coaches are increasingly delving into mental training. Many young athletes are following suit.

A 15-year-old Taekwondo athlete going through gender dysphoria shared, “Mental readiness is just as crucial as physical fitness. I’ve shifted my perspective on victory and defeat. Rather than fixating on winning or losing, I focus on the lessons learned from each match or competition.”

Having started Taekwondo at the tender age of three, the athlete continued, “Regardless of the outcome, if I haven’t given my all in a match, I believe I could not have been a better fighter that day. Success is closely tied to a sharp mindset.”

While hesitant to fully acknowledge it, clinical psychologist J. Greenfield asserts that mental health significantly impacts athletic performance. He explains, “The sport that causes stress, anger, depression, or anxiety leads to defeat even before the competition begins. One might possess exceptional talent, but a lack of mental focus can be a major hurdle.
