The most borrowed book from TPL is a women’s novel

This year, among the most borrowed books from the Toronto Public Library (TPL) are The Women by Kristin Hannah and Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. According to TPL, many of the most borrowed books in 2024 feature strong female protagonists.

The most borrowed books from TPL this year are Fourth Wing and its sequel, Iron Flame. TPL is the country’s largest and busiest library system.

Both books, published last year, are part of the Empyrean series, a fantasy romance centered around the protagonist, Violet Sorrengail. She enrolls in a war college for dragon riders.

Ranking second on the list of the most borrowed books in Toronto is The Women, which was published in February this year. The book also tops the most borrowed lists at Halifax Public Library and Saskatoon Public Library.

Bonnie Garmus’ Lessons in Chemistry, published in 2022, is also among the most borrowed books at all three libraries. It ranks second in Toronto, third in Halifax, and fifth in Saskatoon.

For non-fiction, Atomic Habits by James Clear is the most borrowed book across all three libraries. Originally published in 2018, the book explores how small changes can lead to significant results.

Toronto Public Library has also released a list of its most borrowed Canadian titles. Local author Carley Fortune ranks high on this list, with two of her novels—This Summer Will Be Different (published this year) and Meet Me at the Lake (published last year)—topping the charts. Her debut novel, Every Summer After, published in 2022, ranks tenth on the list.
